Our story

Tounza means good luck in Amazigh. It is the Moroccan brand making fantasy jewelry from wood essences, finished with refined details, together with the artisans of Meknes.

Good luck, in wood

Tounza was born from a simple idea: to bring wood, the most natural of materials, into jewelry, the most refined of objects. The meeting of the two says something about us: our two sides, good and evil, freedom and submission, and a spiritual link to where we come from.

Our tagline, Bring life to life, is what we try to do with every piece: take a branch, a root or a slice of driftwood, and give it a second life you can wear or keep on a shelf.

The signs of the Atlas and the geometry of the city

Two sources come back in everything we make. The first is the tattoos the Amazigh women of the Atlas wore on their faces and hands: small geometric signs for a woman, a bird, a family, each one a way of saying who you are. The second is the geometry of Moroccan architecture: the stars of zellige, the flowers of carved plaster, the patterns of painted ceilings.

On the pieces, these signs are painted, engraved or embroidered by hand. The Craft and symbols page explains what each one means.

Made with the artisans of Meknes

Meknes, on the Atlantic coast, has worked wood for generations, above all the fragrant thuja its workshops are known for. Tounza works with the artisans of the town and their ancestral techniques:

  • filigree and marquetry
  • crochet and embroidery
  • leather work
  • painting on wood, the Tataoui painted ceilings, and carving

Each piece is made by hand, a few copies at a time. That is why no two are exactly alike, and why a piece that sells out takes a while to come back.

What we are working towards

Our aim is to make luxury objects with refined finishes using Moroccan ancestral techniques, and to show Moroccan identity through wood, far beyond Morocco. Every parcel leaves from Meknes, and you can see exactly what its delivery costs before you pay: see Delivery and customs.
