Wood, thread and the old signs of the Atlas.
Earrings, necklaces and small objects made by hand in Meknes. Many carry the signs the Amazigh women of the Atlas once wore as tattoos.

Every sign has a meaning
The motifs painted on Tounza pieces come from Amazigh tattoos and from the geometry of Moroccan architecture. This is what they say.
All the symbolsThe woman
A figure of a woman, read as tilelli: freedom. Amazigh women of the Atlas once wore signs like it as tattoos.
The bird
The bird that goes where it likes. Another way of writing freedom.
Mother and husband
Two linked signs for the mother and the husband: the family held together on one line.
The orange amulet
Orange is worn for strength, joy and optimism.
The eight-point star
The star of zellige and carved plaster, drawn from the geometry of Islamic architecture.
The woods, all worked by hand
From the dense grain of olive to the scented, figured thuja of Meknes, the wood is the first material of every piece.
CedarLight, fragrant and fine grained, and it takes paint well. Moroccan craftsmen have worked it for centuries in doors, ceilings and boxes.
ThujaThe wood Meknes is known for: dark, richly figured and scented. The town's craftsmen have turned and inlaid it for generations.
OliveDense and streaked, with a warm grain that deepens as it ages.
BeechPale, close grained and hard wearing. The workshop wood for spoons and turned pieces.
DriftwoodBranches worn smooth by water, dried and cut into slices that keep their rings and bark.
EucalyptusA warm-toned wood that turns cleanly on the lathe.
